Smartphones often contain a lot of personal data. Luckily Google continuously adds new security to Android. Unfortunately, only 7 percent run the latest Android version (Nougat). Better be safe than sorry and protect your mobile device with a certified Android antivirus solution.
Ideally an Android antivirus protect its user from installing malicious apps, surfing to bad websites, audits app permissions, blocks unwanted SMS & Calls, helps to find/locate lost or stolen devices and backs up personal files. Additionally, the antivirus should not drain the battery and have no (or few) false alarms. In our 2017 we reviewed 10 Android solutions on these aspects. Real world protection was measured using 4.081 malicious apps. We downloaded 500 popular apps from from various third-party app stores to check on false alarms.
Android antivirus software participating in our 2017 mobile security review:
- AI Max Dev Labs Security Antivirus (Max Cleaner)
- Alibaba Ali Money Shield
- Avast Mobile Security and Antivirus
- Avira Antivirus Security
- Bitdefender Mobile Security and Antivirus
- ESET Mobile Security and Antivirus
- Kaspersky Internet Security for Android
- McAfee Mobile Security
- Tencent WeSecure
- Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android
As usual all software was updated before the actual test. Tests ran in parallel with internet (WIFI) access through separate high speed lines. The test ran on Android version 6 (Marshmallow) which was officially released in October 2015. Android Marshmallow currently has the largest market share and basic antivirus functionality. This makes Marshmallow the most suitable version to show the added value of a third-party Android antivirus.
